Blogging Hiatus

Gentle Reader,

Some five years into the life of Afrika T, I now find myself unable to keep up with contributions at a level that I and you have come to expect from this blog. Partly this is because of other activities in responsible tourism (see example here, and another here), partly from other projects in sustainability (see examples here and here), and partly for reasons that are more personal.

I am certainly still active online and in responsible travel, so feel free to comment on existing posts here, to follow me on Twitter, and to note what I've been reading online via Delicious. I also hope to return to Afrika T, so am not bringing the blog to a halt, just declaring a hiatus of indefinite duration...

Thank you for your support over the years, and, if you're a newcomer to the site, may it still prove valuable.

Kind regards

Kurt

Responsible Giving

A frequently asked question by responsible travellers is how to give - money, time, goods - to the destinations and communities they visit. The urge is commendable, but actually fulfilling one's good intentions can be an Orwellian experience - for the recipients as well as the givers.

It's no surprise that the 19th century American tycoon and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, said "It is more difficult to give money away intelligently than it is to earn it in the first place."

This is a vexing issue that I've written about (at some length), but for those seeking a short list of how to give responsibly, below are some good options.
I'm not involved with any of them, or (to my knowledge) with projects they fund, but my research and basic desktop vetting make me comfortable that these are credible and worth considering if you're inclined to charity, micro-investment or philanthropy.

If you're a serious philanthropist - or just want to approach your giving like one - then be sure to read Philanthropy UK's Guide to Giving, found here (or download as pdf).

If you're interested more in volunteer travel, or voluntourism, I have a few suggestions that can be found here.
