Blogging Hiatus

Gentle Reader,

Some five years into the life of Afrika T, I now find myself unable to keep up with contributions at a level that I and you have come to expect from this blog. Partly this is because of other activities in responsible tourism (see example here, and another here), partly from other projects in sustainability (see examples here and here), and partly for reasons that are more personal.

I am certainly still active online and in responsible travel, so feel free to comment on existing posts here, to follow me on Twitter, and to note what I've been reading online via Delicious. I also hope to return to Afrika T, so am not bringing the blog to a halt, just declaring a hiatus of indefinite duration...

Thank you for your support over the years, and, if you're a newcomer to the site, may it still prove valuable.

Kind regards

Kurt

Indigenous People's Week 2011 8-12 August

Planeta.com, Nutti Sami Siida and friends are hosting Indigenous People's Week August 8-12, 2011. This is an online unconference focusing on Indigenous Peoples and tourism. Themes include biodiversity conservation, crafts, cultural heritage, food and literacy (traditional reading and writing and digital literacy -- the emerging read write culture).

They are calling for recommendations of educational and engaging videos, podcasts, websites and online resources.

Indigenous People's Week highlights examples where tourism has helped the indigenous culture to prosper. Featured will be participants in the Indigenous Tourism and Biodiversity Website Award, which I was proud to judge for last year.

"The objective of Indigenous People's Week is to embed responsible indigenous tourism into the bigger picture," said Planeta.com founder Ron Mader. There are plenty of great examples of thriving indigenous cultures around the world, people who are eager to share stories and engage with visitors. Web 2.0 is being used by indigenous peoples and visitors alike and we invite friends to share stories that inspire and educate us all."

Afrika T looks forward to joining in the activities this week, highlighting indigenous South African tourism and cultural experiences. For those using Twitter, be sure to tweet with #ipw.

  1. Is there any place where I can watch the podcasts for the conference?
