This, from South Africa's national Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT):
National Minimum Standards for Responsible Tourism and Accreditation System
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) are preparing National Minimum Standards for Responsible Tourism (NMSRT). The NMSRT are an effort to establish a common understanding of responsible tourism, and will be a baseline standard that any tourism business should aspire to reach. The NMSRT and associated accreditation system for tourism certification programmes, also aim to harmonise the different sets of criteria currently used for certifying the sustainability of tourism businesses in South Africa. The NMSRT are based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria and National Responsible Tourism Guidelines, amongst others.DEAT now invites tourism stakeholders to comment on the draft standards. Stakeholders can do so in the following ways:
- attending consultative workshops: 17 March 2009, Blue Waters Hotel, Durban OR 19 March 2009, Centurion Hotel, Centurion
- registering your interest by providing your contact details to Derick Mbungele at DEAT (DMbungele@deat.gov.za AND rtstandards@gmail.com). You will receive a password for the project website upon registration.
- downloading the Draft Standards from http://icrtedge.basecamphq.com and posting/e-mailing your comments to the project team (you will need to register as stakeholder first)
The comment period closes on 1 April 2009.
